New Delaval Primary steps back in time at Beamish
This term the whole of New Delaval Primary school set off to Beamish Museum, as part of their Local Study topic. No mean feat! As I had just started work at the school, as a Year Four teacher, then I was suitably impressed. No travel sickness or shouts of "Are we there yet?" meant a peaceful journey and although the children were very excited they behaved impeccably.
The children experienced a Victorian lesson in the old school in the morning and all the children played along very well with the Victorian teacher - chanting their tables; writing on slates and reciting poetry. Then in the afternoon they were free to explore the rest of the open air museum with their teachers.
With the help of photographs taken on the day, my Year Four class proceeded to recount the day's events. Here are some of their recollections and comments: Jayden said that the next day he was talking about it all day long with Ethan. Dane, Nathan and Joe agreed that it was an awesome visit! They thought the museum would be old and run down, but they were very impressed. Plus Joe couldn't believe how dark it could be down the mine.
Megan was amazed that the iron in the pit cottage was heated up on the range and Ryan liked the real cat sleeping on the proggy mat. Kodi and Tully tried to use the poss tub, whilst Cally was surprised at the outside toilet in the back yard.
Up at the old town the children found out more about days gone by. Seyran really enjoyed the bumpy tram ride, whilst Louis was intrigued with the old Co-op. He said that the products on sale were very different to what we can buy today and he was particularly interested in the old money. Back at school the next day I showed the class a sixpence, three-penny bit and a shilling - memories for me of coins wrapped in grease-proof paper, inside scones at parties, came flooding back!
Back on the bus the children were tired yet full of chatter about the day. Lots of experiences and goodies from the gift shop equalled a successful day! Real living history had made an impression on our children.
This week my class are off to Blyth Battery and the lighthouse in Bath Terrace - read our blog next week to find out all about it.

Greatbto see that the Wensleydale tradition continues at New Deleval. I'm sure the kids had a great time as we did so many times over the years. Nice to hear the school is going from strength to strength.
