After visiting Beamish Museum last term my Year Four class, from New Delaval Primary School, set off to Blyth Beach to find out about some local history. Beamish had given them a flavour of Geordie history but they were in for a real treat in their hometown of Blyth.
At the beach there is a Battery used during WW2 and a newly developed promenade with café, park and beach huts. A 20 minute walk took them past an old bandstand, the port of Blyth and Ridley Park and they ended up at Bath Terrace, which has a small row of Georgian houses and a lighthouse built in 1788. The disused lighthouse stands nearly 19 metres high in the back lane of Bath Terrace, peeping above the house roofs - an amazing sight. It used to be only 10 metres from the sea.

Over 400 scouts, explorer scouts and leaders from across Northumberland flooded to the countryside last Saturday (15th October 2011) for a huge scouting event. The scouts were taking part in 'Operation Twilight', which is a enormous evasion exercise, becoming more popular and growing in numbers each time, with record breaking numbers this year. The young people, from Blyth, Cramlington, Seaton Delaval, and the surrounding areas, met at St Mary's Church of England Middle School in Belford to register, have their kit checked and a quick safety briefing.

The Abbie Deans Spirit of Blyth and Wansbeck All Weather Lifeboat could be sidelined for up to a week while repairs are carried out on the walkway leading down to her.
A routine inspection of the tidal staircase which leads down to the pontoon found it needed structural work, which will hopefully be carried out in the next week. The logistics of keeping the boat on call when it is 'off pontoon' are difficult but in an extreme emergency the coastguard will contact chariman Barry Elliott for consideration to deploy.
The lifeboat has been moved to a safe point in the Port of Blyth Harbour while the work is done. Mr Elliott said: "We've had to take it out of service as it's just as important to get our crew members safely on and off the vessel as it is getting the boat out on to an emergency call.
This term the whole of New Delaval Primary school set off to Beamish Museum, as part of their Local Study topic. No mean feat! As I had just started work at the school, as a Year Four teacher, then I was suitably impressed. No travel sickness or shouts of "Are we there yet?" meant a peaceful journey and although the children were very excited they behaved impeccably.
The children experienced a Victorian lesson in the old school in the morning and all the children played along very well with the Victorian teacher - chanting their tables; writing on slates and reciting poetry. Then in the afternoon they were free to explore the rest of the open air museum with their teachers.
