Title chasers undone by Blyth Town

Both Wark and Heaton Stannington are expected to figure largely in the late season battle for the Northern Alliance Premier Division title, but both suffered emphatic defeats last weekend.

Heaton Stannington have several games in hand to firm up their title bid but, like Wark, interrupted by Blyth Town at Grounsell Park where their visitors claimed a 3-0 victory.

Heaton had been unbeaten in their seven previous outings but failed to score for the first time in this campaign and Blyth deserved to wrap up the points.

Northumberland hit by deluge

Flood warnings were in force around Northumberland this morning as residents were bracing themselves for yet more downpours.

Up to three inches of rainwater fell on the North East's already saturated ground yesterday, with a similar amount forecast for today. The banks of the River Coquet at Rothbury burst and conditions caused flooding in low-lying areas of Morpeth, as well as in Gateshead and Sunderland.

Extreme weather in Scotland caused a landslide on to the tracks between Dunbar and Berwick. Last night East Coast Main Line services were halted and bosses were considering replacement bus services.

This morning there was a less serious flood watch warning in force on the River Blyth.

Flood warnings along Northumberland coast

Environment Agency bosses have issued a number of flood warnings as the region is set to be deluged with rain.

Chiefs at the agency have warned people living in coastal areas to be on their guard against the possibility of flooding to homes and businesses.

The warning comes as Met Office experts predict that almost a third of the average expected rainfall for March will fall on the region within the next two days.

Ashington are hoping home comforts can help them defy their underdog status in tonight's Northumberland Senior Cup semi- final against Blyth Spartans.

Up to 1,000 supporters are expected at Woodhorn Lane tonight, and Ashington boss Gary Middleton feels that kind of support could help spring a cup upset.

"We're expecting a big crowd," he said. "Hopefully the public can be our 12th man on the night and help send us to the final."

A special school in Northumberland which celebrated its centenary last year looks set to move to a new site.

Education bosses are proposing to relocate East Hartford School near Cramlington - which has catered for youngsters with complex learning difficulties for 20 years - to the Bebside Middle School buildings in Blyth.

The Blyth school will close in August this year as part of the town's switch to a two-tier education system, making it available for occupation by pupils with special educational needs.

Excuses are not his bag, and nor was Mick Tait making them after Blyth Spartans lost at home to Gloucester City.

The Croft Park club were "awful", read his honest assessment.

The Spartans boss was nonetheless incensed by referee Danny Markham's decision to award a contentious penalty, which set Lee Smith on his way to a hat-trick and City on the road to victory.

Blyth Valley groups invited to funding fair

Voluntary and community groups in Blyth, Cramlington and Seaton Valley who are in need of funding are invited to attend a free fair.

There will be opportunity to meet funders directly at the event, which is being run by Community and Voluntary Action Blyth Valley.

Blyth shopper gets bag back off mugger

A shopper chased a mugger and reclaimed her bag after he snatched it off her in Bondicar Terrace.

The 59-year-old woman was walking towards shops on Bondicar Terrace when she was approached from behind by a man who snatched her bag and started running off.

The woman chased after him and screamed at the thief who dropped her bag and then fled towards Waterloo Road.

Students have been getting valuable lessons in how to run a home of their own in preparation for when they leave their school.

Since September, 270 youngsters at Blyth Community College, Northumberland, have been taking part in a programme aimed at equipping them for life after school.

In the latest initiative, housing management agency Homes for Northumberland joined forces with other partners to give the students a taste of managing their own homes.

They were asked to work out how much it would cost to run their own place for a week, including all the bills and hidden costs. They also got useful tips on how to avoid mounting debts.

Ray Boycott, managing director with HfN, said "Some of these pupils may become tenants of ours in the future and we would like to help them maintain the quality of their life.''

The widow of cancer campaigner Guy Hedley has vowed to fight on for access to the drugs which could prolong patients' lives.

Rhonda Hedley says she will continue to campaign in memory of her "brave and amazing" husband, who lost his battle with bowel and stomach cancer this month, aged just 48.

For almost two years the father-of-two from Blyth battled to be prescribed a drug called Avastin on the NHS because he believed it would buy him more time with his family.
