He has joined hundreds of other Labour general election candidates across the country in signing up for Cancer Research UK's Cancer Commitment.

How the new Narec wind farm site at Blyth may lookGiant wind turbines will be tested off the North East coast thanks to an £18.5m Government grant.

The cash was awarded to the New and Renewable Energy Centre (Narec), in Blyth, which will build an offshore facility to trial the huge structures before they are sent out to sea.

Narec has already secured investment to test turbine blades and motors, and the latest deal serves to bolster its reputation as a world leader in this field.

Talks are to be held between charity bosses and council officials in a bid to save a cherished community transport service which provides a lifeline for vulnerable people in part of Northumberland.

The Journal revealed on Wednesday that the Blyth Valley Disabled Forum (BVDF) might be forced to take the vehicle off the road because of budget savings and funding changes agreed by the county council.

Pensioners had to be evacuated from their sheltered accommo-dation in the early hours of this morning.

The 20 elderly residents of Alwinton Court, in North Farm, Blyth, were escorted to safety after a small fire was started by a woman smoking in bed.

Fire crews from Blyth and Cramlington attended the complex at 1am today.

The resident had managed to put the fire out herself before firefighters ventilated the property.

A last minute promise of extra cash for Northumberland's crumbling roads and a climbdown on spending cuts in care of the elderly was enough to avoid a potential council budget crisis last night.

The 11th-hour package of concessions by County Hall leaders enabled the unitary authority to finally agree its 2010/11 budget plans, with just four days to spare.

The agreement averted the risk of the council failing to set a legal budget in the required timescale, and the threat of Government-appointed commissioners being sent in to do the job.

Introduction to Blyth Running Club

Posted by Blyth Running Club on Feb 23, 10 12:20 PM in Bloggers

Formed soon after the first Great North Run in 1981 our members have been pounding the streets and trails around Blyth on a regular basis ever since.

Our Green and White Club colours are a familiar sight at races throughout the North East and over the years we have built a reputation as one of the friendliest and most sociable running clubs in the area.

As you might expect, there is a wide range of abilities within the Club; from those highly competitive runners who are regularly at the front end of a race, to the less speedy, but just as determined, people who help to make those at the front look good, as well as a number of members who have no interest in being competitive at all and just like to run to keep fit. So whatever your ability, you can rest assured that you will fit in and there will always be someone for you to run with.
