Anger in Blyth at new trial period for rival market
A controversial new market in Morpeth is to be held for a second trial period next year so that its impact can be more fully assessed.
Anger erupted last month when the market was set up in Morpeth on Fridays for a six-week trial, aimed at helping decide whether it should become a permanent addition to the town's traditional Wednesday market.
The move was fiercely criticised by councillors in nearby Blyth, which also holds a regular Friday market and where £3m of taxpayers ' money has recently been spent on revitalising its market square.
They claimed a rival event risked damaging Blyth market and undermining wider efforts to regenerate the town centre and its economy.
Now the six-week trial has been completed - and the Morpeth and Ponteland Markets Forum has agreed to repeat the exercise in February before a decision is taken on whether it should become permanent. It is felt a second trial is needed because the first was held during the run-up to the opening of the town's £32m Sanderson Arcade shopping centre.
Coun Grant Davey, who represents Blyth on the county council, said: "I still believe that if the Morpeth market is going to be in direct competition with ours then it should not be held on the same day. It was shop traders in Blyth who originally contacted me about this, because they were worried about the situation."

Councillor Davies was Portfolio Holder on the former Blyth Valley Borough Council when the Market Traders were ignored by his Labour Controlled Council, he did nothing to help these traders or the Shopkeepers in Blyth when their businesses were disrupted during the disasterous so-called regeneration project, that also went £400,000 overspent under his control!
Councillor Davies should resign from his position or be more economical with the truth!
Mr Brown,
Why should the people of Blyth Valley listen to anything you have to say when it was you who was working on the counters at the post office when your colleagues were on strike. If no-body wants to believe that then ask Cllr Gordon Knox who was Mr Brown's Union worker at that time. There is a certain term for this within the North East( S C A B , It is very decieving for soemone like yourself to critise Mr Campbell and the Labour Party when in fact its hypocrisy when you make false statements
The comments made by Makaveli are typical of many Labour Supporters! 1) He/She hides behind a false name because he/she are aware that they are not speaking the truth or maybe this is to hide their embarrassment at not being able to spell!
2) He/She does not believe in Freedom of Speech, which our forefathers in the Labour Party fought for, so he/she didn’t get involved in a discussion they decided to attack someone personally!
3) He/She cannot enter into a debate and now because of his/her inability to do so, have tried to spoil a wonderful website, where people may exercise their right to give an opinion, whether others agree or disagree!
4) He/She has very little knowledge of any situation and has not yet realised that the Labour Person they refer to as a Councillor lost heavily last year at the election!
5) May I ask Makaveli, before you called me a scab, did you have the permission to publish the name of the person you named as the councillor, who we all assume give you the information? If not is this not a serious offence?
If you are representing the Labour Party, try to show more honesty, start by getting your facts right and then you may gain the confidence to give your full name as I did!
You never know you may also learn to give everyone the chance to have freedom of speech, instead of just listening and following the top brass of you party and not being allowed to have a mind of your own!
Mr Brown, please accept my apologies for the spelling as my dyslexia takes control. I think some of your comments are again hypercritical as you keep forgetting what the Labour Government does for the working class, to name a few - Car scrappage scheme, home buy direct, child saving funds, working tax credits etc etc. I could keep going but my aim is not to back the Labour party but to tell you the facts! Mr Campbell has achieved a great amount of success with his role such as - the building of BCC, The schools, Re-generation of Blyth Market, Blyth beach, Cramlington Shopping Centre, saving hundreds of jobs at factories in Blyth Valley and again I could go on and on. Yet you seem more for criticism than praise but yet you portray yourself as being Mr Perfect - at least you think you are. If you hold a debate with any of the Labour Party members around Blyth Valley I will be willing to attend and then I'll put you in your place.
The reason behind my alias is because i prefer not to put my name in lights.
I always have and always will, speak my mind but you are right I am a Labour supporter because they fight for the people.
Known as Makavel
Makaveli, First of all I accept your apologies about your spelling, but I note in true Labour style you do not apologise for your disgusting personal attack about me on a website where everyone should be allowed to put their own views, on matters relating to the news in the local newspaper, whether you agree with them or not!
I also noticed how you changed the subject of the debate, which referred to statements Cllr. Davies had made about Blyth Market Place, which he was in charge of as Portfolio Holder on Blyth Valley Borough Council, during which time the Market Traders and Local Businesses problems were ignored!
Never once in my comments on this thread, did I mention the name of Mr Campbell or Labour Government, until I received the personal attack from you during your attempts, which appear to be only to divert people away from the truth!
Also in true Labour style, you failed to mention any of the 5 points put to you regarding Freedom of Speech, or my reminder that the person you mention as a councillor failed heavily in the last election! But most of all you failed to mention, if you had permission from the person you claimed to be a councillor, to use the incorrect information, which you claim he would support!
From a person in Cramlington I confirm there has been no investment whatsoever in Cramlington Town Centre unless it is hidden underground so I fail to give any credit to anyone for that as it's a none event. Maka give it a rest as you are talking nonsense.
