Young Blyth footballers win national tournament

Posted by The Journal on Jul 9, 09 03:32 PM in Sport

Young footballers from Blyth in Northumberland beat squads from coalfield communities across England at the weekend, to be crowned champions of a national tournament.

Red Bull Bingo Wings won the Premiership title at the Game On football competition finals, held at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday. It is the fourth consecutive year a team from the North East has scooped the title.

The finals attracted 63 teams from across the North East, Yorkshire, the North West and East Midlands.

All have been competing in regional Midnight Leagues, which aim to get young people off the streets by giving them the chance to take part in organised football in the evenings.

More than 300 girls and boys aged 12-16 took part in the day-long tournament, organised by The Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT).
