Dunn calls on Spartans to halt slump

Posted by The Journal on Oct 31, 08 05:21 PM in Sport

Blyth Spartans boss Harry Dunn has urged his side to arrest their slide in the Blue Square North when they take on draw specialists Droylsden in Tameside tomorrow.

While progress has been made in the FA Cup, the Spartans have lost their last five league games - and a sixth at the Butchers Arms could see them drop into the relegation zone.

Blyth's two league games after Droylsden are also away, against third-top Harrogate Town and top-half club Gainsborough Trinity, with the big Shrewsbury Town FA Cup tie taking place next weekend.

Young people are being targeting in a hard-hitting campaign to reduce the number of bonfire and firework-related injuries across Northumberland.

Fireworks injure almost 1000 children in the North of England every year, often resulting in permanent scarring or disfiguration. Now Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is warning pupils in secondary schools about the dangers in a programme of educational visits.

UP to 500 homes could be demolished as part of a multi-million-pound regeneration project aimed at safeguarding the future of a Northumberland seaside village.

The houses in the neighbouring communities of Cambois and North Blyth are at risk of being bulldozed under a development masterplan which would transform the area forever - and effectively create a new village.

Deadline looms for council shake-up

RESIDENTS, businesses and voluntary organisations in Blyth Valley have just over a week to have their say on how the borough should be represented when unitary local government is introduced in Northumberland in April.

The deadline for public comments on plans to create three parish/town councils in the borough - for Blyth, Cramlington and Seaton Valley - is noon on Friday November 7.

Criminals in Blyth got an early morning wake up call today after a series of dawn raids by Northumbria Police.

The "arrest day" marked the start of a major initiative aimed at driving down crime throughout Northumberland over the coming months.

More than 50 officers hit addresses in the county, arresting people wanted for offences ranging from violence to theft. Other targets include people who fail to appear in court and those who have breached community sentences.

FREE bus transport for older students is set to leave Northumberland County Council with a £500,000 bill. But councillors last night hailed the scheme to provide passes for A-level and college students as a massive success - and said it was likely to cost much less than feared.

The free pass has seen the number of teenagers using buses more than double, from 800 in July to 1,850 now. The county council took the decision to scrap fares after they rose to £360 a year under the previous Labour administration.

BLYTH remain too close for comfort near the foot of the Blue Square North table following this defeat at the hands of Vauxhall Motors last night.

Karl Noon fired the home side ahead midway through the first half but Spartans came back to level when Shaun Reay was on target before the break.
