A trio of retired cyclists braved rain, wind and fog to complete a Lands End to John O'Groats relay bike ride.

Ray Luckett, 66, Paul Braiden, 67, and Mike Jackson, 60, and a support team of seven finished the relay in less than 60 hours, cycling non-stop.

Blyth Spartans face old boys in FA Cup

Blyth Spartans will hope their old boys connection doesn't derail their FA Cup hopes at Croft Park tonight.

The Spartans face a second qualifying round replay against Whitby Town - a club manager Harry Dunn served with distinction.

The Seasiders earned a second bite of the cherry with an injury-time equaliser from former Blyth midfield man Andrew Thompson on Saturday.

Goals in each half for Chris Taylor and Jeff Fuller earned Blyth Town a 2-0 Challenge Cup passport at the expense of visitors Cramlington Town. Blyth Town's next game in the Northern Alliance Premier Division is against Walker at home on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Blyth Spartans eased into the next round of the Women's FA Cup following a 5-0 win against Prudhoe Town and now host Forest Hall who won 2-1 against Gateshead Cleveland Hall.

Featuring talks, interactive demonstrations and the chance to win shopping vouchers and a laptop, the open evening will give an insight into all aspects of school life.

Head Teacher Bridget Knowles said: "We're looking forward to the evening and all our departments will be represented to show the best of what we do here.

IT appeared Blyth Spartans had booked their place in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup when they scored twice in three minutes late in the game, But there was still time for Whitby to claim a replay.

Spartans could hardly have made a worse start against their UniBond League Premier Division opponents who were once managed by Blyth's current incumbent Harry Dunn.

He must have been furious as Sam Garvie gave Whitby the lead after just 18 seconds. From the kick-off Tony Hackworth fired the ball into the Blyth penalty area and Garvie pounced leaving goalkeeper Gareth Powell with no chance.

Zhong GuoAn illegal immigrant driven by jealousy when he shot dead a North East businessman in a planned execution has been jailed for life.

Zhong Guo must serve a minimum 24 years behind bars for the cold-blooded assassination of Iranian Shahdad Pouresmaeilieh.

The Chinese national was jealous of the close relationship his partner Yung Fang Zhang had with Mr Pouresmaeilieh, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

A BUSINESS development scheme aimed at triggering multi-million-pound investment has been launched to boost entrepreneurship in Northumberland during the economic downturn.

Regional development agency One NorthEast has joined up with Northumberland County Council and Northumberland Strategic Partnership to launch the Private Sector Projects Fund to provide financial support to people and companies.

The fund is aimed at those in the Blyth, Wansbeck and Berwick areas who have plans to develop property for offices, manufacturing, service industries or tourism and leisure.

PEOPLE living or working in Blyth Valley can quiz borough councillors and officials about issues which concern them at a public Question Time event next month.

The 30-minute session will start at 6pm on Thursday October 16 in the Council Chamber at Blyth civic centre.

Vandalism causes blackout in Blyth homes

VANDALS caused a power blackout for 2,000 homes after torching a motorbike next to an electricity pole.

Electricity bosses last night branded the attack "an act of utter stupidity" and warned the culprits they had been dicing with death.

Families in the Blyth and Seaton Valley area were plunged into darkness for up to four hours on Wednesday night after the power cut happened at about 8.20pm.

PLANS for a new supermarket in Blyth town centre have taken a step forward with the acquisition of a social club which will be included in the development.

Blyth Social Club on Keelman's Terrace is the first property to be acquired by regional development agency One NorthEast, on behalf of the SENNTRi regeneration partnership, for the supermarket project. The deal includes a two-year lease back arrangement, which means that the club can stay open until 2010 if required.

A number of properties will have to be acquired as part of the re-development project, and other businesses affected by the scheme have already been notified.
