Blyth Valley Borough Council has lost its legal battle to make sure 30% of all homes on new developments are affordable.

The Northumberland Council's tough policy set a target of 30% affordable homes on all new residential developments where 10 or more were being built.

It was quashed in May by High Court judge Mr Justice Andrew Collins - who said that property in the borough was already "as cheap as chips".

HMS Blyth sailors get gulf medals

BRAVE sailors have been honoured for their dangerous work in clearing mines from the waters around Iraq.

The crew of HMS Blyth has carried out a delicate operation over the last five weeks removing the deadly weapons from the Northern Arabian Gulf.

Sailors on the Faslane-based ship have been awarded operational medals for playing the key role within a UK-led Task Group involving 22 Warships and over 600 personnel.


A METAL thief has been given a dose of rapid justice - after being sent to prison the day after he was arrested for committing the crime.

Christin Santa Maria, 21, was caught stripping lead off the roof of a house in Blyth, Northumberland, at 4am on Wednesday and was beginning a six-month jail sentence the following morning.

Arcot Terrace

Santa Maria, of Windmill Grove, Blyth, was arrested after a householder in Arcot Terrace, pictured, was woken up by loud scraping noises from the roof.
